How to Build a Firewood Rack
Building your
own firewood rack could be a very fun and practical project, as an
outdoor firewood rack could be very handy for those people who use
fireplaces to heat their homes. Here are instructions in making
your own firewood rack. This kind of wood rack could support a
full-face cord or could be customized so that it would be able to
hold more. You could build this firewood rack for almost no cost as
all using the materials that you already have in your
workshop.
The materials which you would need are:
1. Three 2 by 2 by 8 feet, treated (bottom base rails)
2. Two 2 by 4 by 8 feet, treated (left and right end panels)
3. One 2 by 6 by 32 inches, treated (base support)
4. One 4 by 8 by ½ inches, treated plywood (bracing material)
5. 1 ½ inch and 3 inch woodscrews
6. 2 ½ inch nails
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Build the base – choose two 2 by 2 by 8 feet and lay them out
on a flat surface, 16 inches apart.
2. Choose the 2 by 6 and cut two pieces with a 16-inch length
for the left/right, cross bracing, end and attach one to each of
the ends of the 2 by 2 by 8 pieces. With a carpenter square, make
sure that the 2 by 2 by 8 ends are square and even.
3. Get the remaining 2 by 2 by 8 and then cut it in five pieces
that have 16 inches each for the cross-bracing base and using
nails, attach them evenly spaced.
4. Once the structure of the base is complete, you could then
flip it over.
5. Build the panels for the left/right ends – choose a 2 by 4
and then cut two pieces so that they would have a 48-inch length
each to be used for the upright supports and then lay them out on a
flat surface.
6. Choose the plywood for the exterior and then cut two pieces
at 16 by 48 inches to be used for the panels of the left/right
ends.
7. Attach the plywood using 1 ½-inch screws to the 2 by 4’s.
Repeat steps 5 to 7 to create another end panel.
8. Attach the end panels you made to the base – start attaching
the base to the right using 3-inch screws. Repeat this step to
create the left end panel.
9. You could then attach the support braces – choose the plywood
and then cut four pieces of 1-foot squares. Then cut them to have a
45-degree angle and attach one to every corner using 1 ½-inch
screws. Remember to use a lot of screws.
10. Once all the screws have been secured, you could now set the
rack upright. Paint it using a good exterior paint or primer and
you are ready to put it in position so you could begin storing your
firewood in it.
