Firewood Storage

Typically, firewood which has a diameter of more than 8 inches has to be split. Remember that firewood has to be split as soon as it is cut, as it is a lot easier to split wood that has been freshly cut compared to wood that has already been seasoned. This is just one tip to make sure that you would be having great firewood to store and use once you need them.

However, once you already have all of your firewood seasoned and cut an split, you now have to deal with the issue of being able to provide proper storage for them.

As you create your own firewood storage location there are some factors to consider and remember.

You must place your firewood storage rack around 20 to 25 feet away from your home, if possible. This is because firewood can attract a lot of insects, particularly ants and termites. By keeping an appropriate distance from any structures would be able to keep insects from going into your home.

The storage rack or cart must be designed to keep firewood elevated from the ground, as firewood which has been placed on the ground takes a lot more time to season properly, not to mention attracts rodents and snakes into making them their home. Make sure that your firewood would be stacked in such a way that air would be allowed to circulate well around the firewood, however most of the moisture would be drawn from the end that have been cut. It is usually not recommended to cover the firewood as they are seasoned because this would just be trapping the moisture in, delaying the total drying time. This could also cause fungus and mold to grow. After your firewood has been properly seasoned, you could then cover the upper layers especially during winter snow and fall rains. This would be able to let you grab the dry firewood on top as the air continues to circulate on the rest of the firewood and kindling.

Firewood storage is really necessary especially if you love the feeling and warmth and appearance of a great and beautiful fire. You just would have to make sure that you have a proper firewood storage system to keep the firewood logs in great condition until you are ready to use them.
