Firewood Rack

After chopping up and splitting your firewood, you find yourself thinking of a way and a place to store them away for seasoning. A lot of times, people use two trees to support the ends of the stacks of firewood. However, this kind of firewood storage is not really recommended, as the weight of the logs, which are leaning against the two trees, could damage the trunk and could cause smaller trees to bend over. Also, firewood should not be stored simply on the ground because this would cause the wood to rot instead of drying out.

The process of seasoning firewood is done through drying the moisture of the wood. Split wood can dry out a lot faster compared to whole logs. The best and easiest time to chop firewood would be when they are still green. After the firewood is already seasoned, it becomes harder to chop up.

It is advisable to use a log rack, which would raise and support the wood above the ground. This would make sure that the wood is kept off the ground so that it would be able to season and would help keep rodents and bugs and other insects from turning your stack of firewood into their home. You should also never store your firewood against the wall of your home or any building structure. You need to always put the firewood rack out in an open area so that the wind could blow through it for proper seasoning.

When the summer months come, it is recommended to cover just the top portion of the firewood stack so that rain would not get to the firewood while air would be allowed to blow through it to dry it out effectively. When the rainy season and winter season come, you could create a log rack through the use of pressure-treated two-by-fours. However, most times it might be easier to just buy one that comes with a cover, which is designed or customized to fit.

There are some firewood rack manufacturers which say that the firewood covers they sell are able to resist mold and mildew but you would still need to be careful as though the cover will not be getting moldy, the firewood will as it is covered completely.
